Jaundice in Newborn Babies

Every week in the UK, 20 children are diagnosed with a life-threatening liver disease.  Early diagnosis is vital but lack of awareness of these complex conditions means that symptoms, particularly in infants, can easily be missed.

The vital signs of possible liver disease in newborn babies are:

  • Prolonged jaundice i.e. continuing after two weeks old
  • Persistently pale coloured stools
  • Urine which is anything other than colourless
